A Spanish research team have made discoveries which may provide a more effective CAR-T therapy for T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (T-ALL).
The researchers say they have identified crucial differences between cancerous T-cells and healthy T-cells, enabling the diseased cells to become a target for treatment.
Previous research has identified the proteins CD1a and CCR9 as being present in the diseased T-cells of most patients with T-ALL 鈥 but not in healthy cells in the patients鈥 bodies.
Now a team from the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute, Spain, have now developed the first dual CAR-T cell therapy to target CD1a and CCR9 on T-ALL cells. The researchers say it has proved effective in laboratory studies, both in vitro and in vivo, including leukaemia samples donated by patients.
The team, led by Dr Pablo Men茅ndez and Dr Diego S谩nchez, have published their findings in the Journal of Hematology and Oncology.
An Institute spokesperson said: 鈥淢oreover, unlike previous attempts, these new dual CAR-T cells targeting CD1a and CCR9 spare both healthy T lymphocytes and themselves, as well as other bone marrow cells, resulting in an excellent safety profile.
鈥淭hese findings, combined with previous evidence from the same research team and others internationally, open the door to the clinical development of what could become the first effective cell therapy against T-ALL in the medium term.鈥
